2nd European Congress on Family Research 1997, Vienna
Living Arrangements and Family Structures: Facts and Norms
Following the 1st European Congress on “Family Models And Family Reality in Change” which took place October 1994 in Bamberg (Germany), the State Institute for Family Research at the University of Bamberg (ifb) and the Austrian Institute for Family Studies (OIF) coorganized the 2nd European Congress on “Living Arrangements and Family Structures: Facts and Norms”.
The aim of the conference was to present and discuss relevant findings on family policy and family law within the field of the social sciences. Attendees included social scientists, legal experts, and practitioners from across Europe. The focus was on how new family structures and lifestyles might be addressed politically and legally in the future in the various countries, and on which models currently exist in Europe. The conference opened with plenary presentations in which constitutional, demographic, sociological, and legal perspectives were discussed and the various European situations were compared. In the second part of the conference, specific, non-conventional lifestyles—with or without children—were analyzed and discussed from a comparative European perspective. The working groups addressed the following topics: unmarried couples without children, single people, same-sex couples, unmarried couples with children, single parents, and blended families.
